The Toronto Raptors have hired Dwane Casey as the team's new head coach, and will introduce the former Dallas Mavericks assistant at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday, according to reports. The Raptors demoted head coach Jay Triano earlier this offseason after two and a half years in the lead chair. Triano had replaced Sam Mitchell, who like Casey had roots with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Dwane Casey Hired By Raptors, Will Be Introduced As New Head Coach On Tuesday
Casey was the head coach of the Timberwolves over a season and a half; the Wolves fired him in favor of Randy Wittman in 2007, and the team went into the tank. Casey later joined the Mavericks as an assistant under Rick Carlisle. The team is the reigning NBA Champion after Dallas knocked off the Miami Heat in the 2011 NBA Finals.
The delayed course of the Raptors’ opening may have helped Casey; assistants on championship and Finals teams typically have trouble fitting in interviews during a playoff run.
