Derek Jeter Injury: Calf Strain Sends Yankees Shortstop To DL

With Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter rapidly approaching 3,000 career regular season hits, the thought did cross my mind that it would be kind of funny if he got hurt. So I guess you can blame me for this if you want.

Jeter was removed from Monday’s game after pulling up while running the bases. An MRI revealed a Grade 1 calf strain -- the most minor kind of calf strain -- but the Yankees were leaning towards putting Jeter on the disabled list, and now, via Wallace Matthews, we find it’s official:

The Yankees put shortstop Derek Jeter on the disabled list with a calf strain Tuesday.
...
Ramiro Pena was added to the roster prior to Tuesday's game.

The Yankees waited to make an official announcement until after Joe Girardi met with team doctors Tuesday afternoon. This way, not only does Jeter get some rest, but the Yankees also won't have to play with a short bench during a six-game trip to National League ballparks. Jeter will be eligible to return at the end of the month for a home series against the Brewers.

Eduardo Nunez and his .594 OPS will presumably hold down the shortstop position until Jeter comes back. Nunez's middle name, according to Baseball-Reference, is Michelle. Consider this.
