Red Sox shortstop hurt his shoulder on a collision with Carl Crawford, and the pain became worse after a swing in the first inning of Thursday's game against the Rays. After undergoing tests today, the Red Sox confirmed that Lowrie was heading to the disabled list. Drew Sutton will take his place on the active roster.
Jed Lowrie Placed On Disabled List
Lowrie started the season on fire, but since May 1, he has hit .219/.285/.313. He’s had a rough time staying on the field in his career, going on the 60-day DL twice: once for mononucleosis, and once for a wrist injury.
Marco Scutaro should get the bulk of the starts in Lowrie's absence, and he's had a nice season so far as the Red Sox utility man, putting up a .278/.346/.361 line over 97 at-bats.
Sutton is a 28-year-old who has played for five different organizations in his career, and he had a .301/.380/.507 line down at triple-A. His full name is Stephen Drew Sutton, which was sort of a rude, teasing thing for his parents to do to a young shortstop.
