On Father’s Day, Three Different Stories Of Sports’ Dads

It’s Father’s Day, and with baseball in full swing and the 2011 U.S. Open set to conclude today, fathers who have been involved in sports have a couple of hooks for fond memories of this day. (Personally, I’ll watch the final round of the U.S. Open and remember lazy Sundays watching previous ones with my dad.) But here are three of the best stories about fathers and sports that you can read.

The Cautionary Tale: Esquire profiled Todd Marinovich, erstwhile quarterbacking prodigy, in 2009. Read it and reassure yourself that you are or your dad is not that bad.

The Hug Your Kids Tight Story: It’s possibly the saddest story one can read on Father’s Day, but The Post Game’s recounting of the bond that Billy Donovan, John Pelphrey, and Anthony Grant share because of heartbreak will give you ample reason to hug your kids or your family as hard as possible.

The Depths of Love Story: Writing for Sports Illustrated in 2005, Rick Reilly gave the world the story of Dick Hoyt, whose efforts to bond with his disabled son defy belief.
