Clay Buchholz Injury: Boston Starter Likely Out For Season With Stress Fracture
Buchholz’s issue was originally thought to be a muscular problem, but continued discomfort caused the team to send him to Dr. Watkins and have him undergo an MRI. The MRI revealed the stress fracture, while both Watkins and the team have not given out any information other than the diagnosis of a stress fracture in the lower back.
A potential return for Buchholz in the postseason hasn’t been ruled out yet, but it looks very unlikely that he will pitch again at any point this season. Buchholz had a great 2010 season, but his back troubles have slowed him down this year, and he had a 3-4 record with a 3.48 ERA before going on the disabled list.

The Red Sox are publicly denying any worry, but Buchholz had a throwing session canceled so he could visit with a back specialist, and Speier suggests that there’s dread within the organization that Buchholz might be dealing with a structural problem, rather than a muscular problem. More should be known soon, but it stands to reason that a structural problem would be a bigger deal.
Whatever the case, here’s what we do know: Buchholz is not on the verge of returning to the rotation. He may be getting close. He may be very far away. But a return isn’t imminent and may not happen at all, which is why the Red Sox are so active in trade negotiations with other teams selling starters. Despite their first place standing, the Sox want to be able to trust their arms, and with all the problems they’ve experienced, adding a starter seems almost necessary, if only as insurance.

And more, from Gordon Edes:
Buchholz had been making good progress, but he could feel some discomfort while throwing on both Monday and Tuesday, so he’s been shut down for a little while. This isn’t awful, grave news, but it does push back Buchholz’s timetable a few weeks.

Miller signed as a minor league free agent during the offseason. He is scheduled to start Monday against San Diego. He was 3-3 with a 2.47 ERA in 13 games - 12 starts - with Pawtucket.
Buchholz had a breakout season in 2010, going 17-7 with a 2.33 ERA and finishing sixth in Cy Young Award voting. This year, the back troubles have had him only 3-4, 3.48; he had two decent starts in his last two outings, but the back got too troublesome and he’s now landed on the DL.
