The future of Cal’s baseball program was in doubt earlier in 2011, until they escaped an executioner’s axe that looked a lot like budget cuts. Tuesday, at the 2011 College World Series, the Golden Bears made sure their Cinderella run would have at least a couple more days.
College World Series Scores: California Eliminates Texas A&M, 7-3
Cal recovered from an early deficit against Texas A&M, and tacked on runs late to eliminated the Aggies from the 2011 NCAA Tournament with a 7-3 victory in Omaha.
Cal’s No. 9 hitter, Derek Campbell, pulled through, going 2-for-4 with two RBI, and starter Kyle Porter (six innings, three runs) and reliever Matt Flemer (five strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief) short-circuited the Aggies’ offense.
Errors also killed Texas A&M: two in the fifth let Cal take the lead for good, and three of starter Michael Wacha’s seven runs allowed were unearned.
With the victory, Cal guaranteed itself a chance to stay alive in the College World Series. The Golden Bears will play the loser of tonight’s Virginia-South Carolina showdown.
