Birmingham Hire Chris Hughton As Their New Manager

Ten days after the departure of Alex McLeish to Aston Villa, Championship side Birmingham City has turned to former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton to lead their attempt to return to the Premier League.

Hughton, who was sacked by Newcastle in December, takes over immediately at St. Andrew’s looking to repeat his promotion season from 2009 when he brought Newcastle back to the top flight of English football one season after being relegated. In a statement issued by the club, acting Birmingham chairman Peter Pannu praised Hughton.

Acting chairman Peter Pannu felt that Hughton was the perfect candidate to take charge at St. Andrew’s and he is now looking forward to sharing the new man’s ambition.

The statement also said that Pannu impressed by Hughton’s vision and footballing theories of garnering youth and playing attractive football.

Hughton played at Tottenham for 13 season and spent several years as a coach and assistant at Spurs before joining Newcastle in 2008 as the first-team coach. He was appointed Newcastle manager in October 2009. This is Hughton’s second managerial position.
