Justin Morneau Injury: Neck Surgery To Keep First Baseman On DL

“The Disabled List: Go for the wrist. Stay for the neck.”

Catchy, isn't it? Minnesota Twins first baseman Justin Morneau was playing through neck pain in June, but he finally went on the disabled list with a wrist sprain. Before today, the news was good, as Morneau was getting his cast off today. But when he took it off, he must have seen his own shadow, as he's in for another six weeks of winter. From Jim Souhan of the Star-Tribune:

Morneau will undergo surgery to alleviate neck pain, will be out about 6 weeks from next week’s surgery.Morneau’s neck pain was due to a pinched nerve, and apparently the rest he was getting on the disabled list wasn’t doing nearly enough to rectify the problem.

The Twins have been using Luke Hughes as the primary first baseman in Morneau's absence, and Hughes has been hitting well enough after his slow start.
