VIDEO: Mike Zunino Breaks Composite Bat In College World Series

I’ve never seen a bat break in a college baseball game and, to be honest, I didn’t think it was possible. After all, until this year aluminum bats were the standard and those don’t shatter too easily. This year, bats are made of a composite material meant to perform more like wood bats. For Florida’s Mike Zunino, the bat performed a little too much like a wood bat.

Here’s Zunino getting sawed-off in the College World Series on Friday. No, the bat doesn’t slip out of his hands; It breaks right near the handle and flies into the crowd.

It a jaw-dropping moment that left everyone who saw it live wonder if they actually witnessed a broken composite bat. It was also a scary moment -- the bat flew into the stands and could’ve seriously injured the kid it landed near. He got a souvenir out of the situation and is lucky he wasn’t impaled.

Florida won the game and eliminated Vanderbilt, but the broken bat moment stole the show. For more on the game, and the College World Series, head over to this StoryStream.
