Jets QB Erik Ainge Is Retiring From Football
The New York Jets backup Q told the Associated Press on Thursday night that due to injuries to his right foot and throwing shoulder, as well as his general well-being, he will be walking away from football at just 25 years old.
“I don’t know exactly when it happened with my shoulder because I’ve been battling shoulder problems for a long time, but now that I’m not in NFL-playing shape - I’m in good shape, but not NFL shape - my shoulder started really telling me how bad it was,” Ainge said.
Ainge has struggled with substance addiction for several years and missed all of the 2010 season because of it.
”One of the things I’ve been working on in my recovery is acceptance, and to be honest, I need to accept that I want to be able to play baseball with my kids when I’m 35. I don’t want to be limping the rest of my life.
In January, he had foot surgery and he recently tweeted that he also has a torn rotator cuff.
Because of the NFL lockout and the no-contact rule between players and coaches, the Jets are finding out just like the rest of us -- through the media.
