Jonathan Sanchez has walked -- let’s see, carry the two -- 524 batters in June. He’s made it past the fifth inning in just one of his June starts, and he couldn’t make it to the fifth in Friday night’s game against the Cleveland Indians, walking six in 4-2/3 innings. It was his sixth start in a row with three walks or more, and the sixth start this season in which he’s walked five or more.
Jonathan Sanchez Injury: Giants Pitcher Put On DL With Tendinitis
Sanchez didn’t seem too concerned after Friday night. John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle:
After Friday’s game, Sanchez said, “There’s nothing wrong with me. I’m fine. I’m healthy. I’m just having a hard time getting the ball over the plate.”
Saturday, the San Francisco Giants placed Sanchez on the disabled list with left biceps tendinitis. Hmm.
The Giants were already wondering what they should do when Barry Zito was ready, as he had been Pipped by Ryan Vogelsong, who is having an All-Star season. With Zito throwing a complete-game shutout in triple-A last week and a doubleheader coming up, the Giants were going to make a move to get Zito on the roster. Now it seems like Sanchez’s "tendinitis" will give the team the opening they needed.
Sanchez has always struggled with his control -- his 96 walks led the National League last season -- but he’s been historically wild this season, with 5.9 walks per nine innings.
