The Sports Business Journal has reported Sprint is putting together a program called the Sprint Summer Showdown to rewards drivers and fans during the Race to the Chase.
Report: Sprint To Reward Drivers And Fans With Sprint Summer Showdown
The Sprint Summer Showdown is reported to be a six-race, $3 million promotion in which the winners of the first five Sprint Cup Series races on ESPN/ABC – Indianapolis, Pocono, Watkins Glen, Michigan and Bristol – will compete for the prize at the September 4 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway.
Should one of those drivers win the Labor Day race in Atlanta, Sprint will pay the driver $1 million, donate $1 million to the driver’s charity, and pay one fan $1 million. The details of how the fan will be selected, as the program is still in the works.
Former series sponsor Winston held similar promotions from 1985 to 2002. The first, the Winston Million, rewarded any driver that won three of the season’s four biggest races with $1 million bonus. In 1998, the program changed to the No Bull 5, where five drivers were given the chance to win $1 million bonus for themselves and one fan at five select races on the schedule.
Since Sprint took over as title sponsor of the series, they have rewarded the winner of the Sprint All-Star Race with a $1 million, but have never had a program such as the Sprint Summer Showdown.
The program is expected to be announced the weekend of July 17 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
