Back in May, Phillies closer Ryan Madson took a batted-ball comebacker off his hand. Whether or not that has anything to do with this, I'm not sure, but we're here anyway. Todd Zolecki:
Ryan Madson Injury: Phillies Closer On DL With Bruised Hand
The Phillies have placed closer Ryan Madson on the disabled list with a bruised right hand. They have called up RHP Andrew Carpenter.
Madson hasn't pitched since June 18, due to some numbness and small muscle inflammation in his hand. Initially, he wasn't expected to wind up on the disabled list, but it's funny the way these things work out sometimes, and it's presently unknown how much time he's going to miss. With Jose Contreras and Brad Lidge also currently on the DL, the Phillies are a wee bit starved for relievers at the moment.
Antonio Bastardo is expected to handle the closing duties for now. As for Carpenter, he's a 26-year-old righty with excellent numbers for triple-A Lehigh Valley. Given the shape of the Phillies' bullpen, he could well end up throwing some important innings.
