The seventh inning began not with the playing of baseball, but with a delay so that everybody in the park and watching from home could pause and acknowledge that cancer is really awful and destroys lives on a daily basis. “Having a good time watching this All-Star Game? Too bad! Cancer sucks and is everywhere!” On the plus side, as remarked by every person I follow on Twitter, the delay did allow us to find out that Joe Buck is perfectly suited for talking about a debilitating illness.
MLB All-Star Game 2011: NL Piling On Needlessly
I’m skipping paragraphs and going to bullet points now because I’m sick of having to try to tie things together.
- A two-out single by the AL in the top of the seventh spurred Bruce Bochy to replace Jair Jurrjens with Craig Kimbrel. Earlier in the game, Kimbrel was seen sitting next to Kevin Correia in the bullpen. Kind of surprised Bochy went the way he did.
- Tim McCarver on a Paul Konerko swing:
"This is a perfect apple, it just has all these bruises."
[Konerko] was right on that foul ball, he just fouled it back.
- Singing God Bless America after Kimbrel works through the seventh: Michelle Branch. I remember Michelle Branch for her hit single Everywhere, which is the opposite of what she has been lately.
- The NL added to its already insurmountable lead in the bottom, when Pablo Sandoval doubled home Hunter Pence to make it 5-1. It was while Pence was on base that I noticed FOX is using tiny little star avatars to represent baserunners on their in-game scoreboard. Adorable! They could've cheaped out and used asterisks, but they went with stars. Because they are All-Stars!
- Ooh, Miguel Cabrera has reportedly left this game after feeling a twinge in his side while checking a swing. Based on what I know about baseball that is an oblique strain that will knock Cabrera out for four weeks. You always pay for indecisiveness.
