Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz isn't much of a fighter, as he claims that he hasn't been in a fight since kindergarten, and he fights like a guy who hasn't fought since kindergarten. Well, now he can sit in the corner and think about what he did, as Ortiz was suspended for four games.
David Ortiz Suspended Four Games For Brawl
After Ortiz noted his displeasure with an inside pitch from Baltimore Orioles reliever Kevin Gregg on July 8, Ortiz popped out to right field on the next pitch. On his way to first, though, Ortiz was berated by Gregg, and Ortiz charged the mound. Gregg was also suspended for four games for his role in the fight, and both players were fined an undisclosed amount.
There is no word on if Ortiz will appeal, but it would have been much more convenient for the Red Sox if the suspension would have happened before interleague play finished.
Losing Ortiz hurts the Red Sox far more than losing Gregg hurts the Orioles, so was this a planned fight to help the Orioles overtake the Red Sox in a vicious AL East race? So clever, those Orioles. So wily.
