Iowa Hawkeyes basketball head coach Fran McCaffrey will have a hole in his roster after the announcement that highly-touted recruit G Anthony Hubbard has decided to transfer from the school, reports the Des Moines Register. What makes Hubbard's story interesting is that he is a 26-year-old who had previously spent four years in jail following a 2003 armed robbery.
Iowa Basketball Announces Anthony Hubbard Transfer
Hubbard comes from Virginia and played his junior college basketball in Maryland. That played into his decision to leave Iowa:
Hubbard left the Iowa program on Thursday, citing a desire to play closer to home. He grew up in Woodbridge, Va., and played last season at Frederick Community College in Maryland. Hubbard picked Iowa over Nebraska, Penn State and Iona.
One does wonder if Hubbard would have made this same decision had he chosen those other Big 10 schools or Iona.
Iowa went 11-20 (4-14 Big 10) in 2011 and will return three starters who averaged over 10 points per game last season.
