Details of the incident that resulted in Hubbard’s dismissal are unknown, but according to the MSR report no laws were broken and the incident did not involve drugs or illegal substances. MSR cites an additional source in reporting that had another player committed the same infraction, the resulting penalty would have been minor or possibly non-existent, but due to Hubbard’s troubled past, he had no margin for error.
The 26-year-old Hubbard spent nearly four years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery in 2003. The 6-foot-3 guard played at Frederick Junior College in Maryland last season, where he averaged 20.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, earning JUCO All-American honors prior to receiving a scholarship to join the Hawkeyes for the 2011-12 season.
