Iowa Hawkeyes junior college transfer Anthony Hubbard was kicked off the basketball team after violating a "zero tolerance" policy, MetroSportsReport.com reports.
Anthony Hubbard Kicked Off Iowa Basketball Team, According To Report
Details of the incident that resulted in Hubbard’s dismissal are unknown, but according to the MSR report no laws were broken and the incident did not involve drugs or illegal substances. MSR cites an additional source in reporting that had another player committed the same infraction, the resulting penalty would have been minor or possibly non-existent, but due to Hubbard’s troubled past, he had no margin for error.
The 26-year-old Hubbard spent nearly four years in prison for his involvement in an armed robbery in 2003. The 6-foot-3 guard played at Frederick Junior College in Maryland last season, where he averaged 20.7 points and 10.1 rebounds per game, earning JUCO All-American honors prior to receiving a scholarship to join the Hawkeyes for the 2011-12 season.
When word of Hubbard’s departure first broke, there were indications that Hubbard had left the school of his own volition.
“We invested a substantial amount of time and energy in the recruitment of Anthony,” Hawkeyes head coach Fran McCaffery said last week. “ The positive is that we learn of Anthony’s decision versus learning of it in August or September.”
In part of the same statement released by the university, Hubbard expressed a desire to play closer to his Woodbridge, Virginia home.
“I truly appreciate the tremendous opportunity Coach McCaffery, the basketball staff and everyone at the University of Iowa provided me. The community and the school and the people were fantastic. However, at this time, I plan to work with my junior college coach and family to select another school perhaps closer to home.”
