Rockies first baseman/pinch hitter Jason Giambi may be 40 years old, his goatee flecked with gray hair, but that isn't stopping teams in playoff contention from eyeing the former Athletics and Yankees star.
MLB Trade Rumors: Phillies, Pirates Looking At Jason Giambi
Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal says the Phillies may be looking to Giambi for help:
#Phillies interested in #Rockies' Giambi. Could be August deal. Good LH bat for bench - and poss DH if Phils make WS. #tradedeadline #MLB
Giambi, of course, would not displace Ryan Howard at first base for the Phillies, but he could serve the same role he did during the Rockies' 2009 run toward the playoffs, when he hit .292/.452/.583 in 31 key at-bats down the stretch. And if the Phillies don't get him, Denver Post Rockies beat writer Troy Renck says maybe the Pirates will:
In regards to iannetta I heard today that pirates have cooled a bit. Could change. Pirates have some interest in giambi
This might be a more logical stop for Giambi. Lyle Overbay is the Pirates' first baseman and he really isn't hitting at all (.233/.302/.355). Even at 40, Giambi would provide the Bucs with a much better bat and Overbay could spell him in the late innings for defense.
