The Colorado Rockies’ Jason Giambi has been linked to some trade rumors, including possibly the Pirates and Phillies being interested in adding him, either to start at 1B (Pittsburgh) or to provide a lefthanded bench bat (Philadelphia).
MLB Trade Rumors: Jason Giambi Strains Quad
Those plans may be on hold Tuesday morning, as Giambi suffered a strained quad during Monday night’s Rockies game at Los Angeles, according to MLB.com:
Giambi suffered the injury running down the first-base line when Dodgers second baseman Jamey Carroll knocked down his one-out grounder, then threw wildly to first.
“I pulled up before I really got it bad, but we won’t be able to tell until tomorrow,” Giambi said. “I tweaked it a little bit against the Brewers when I hit the double off ‘K-Rod’ [Francisco Rodriguez].”
The Rockies are 11.5 games out of first place and seven games under .500, and seem out of contention; it seems likely that they will move Giambi before the non-waiver deadline on Sunday, although he will likely clear waivers and could also be dealt during August. Giambi’s injury will be re-evaluated later on Tuesday.
