Brewers Acquire Felipe Lopez From Rays

The Milwaukee Brewers lost All-Star second baseman Rickie Weeks for three to six weeks because of a serious ankle sprain on Wednesday. The only internal options to replace Weeks were Craig Counsell and Josh Wilson on the major-league roster, which aren't exactly inspiring from an offensive standpoint. Considering this, the Brewers acquired Felipe Lopez from the Rays for cash considerations.

Of course, Lopez hasn't done much with the bat since 2009, when he hit .310/.383/.427 with the Diamondbacks and Brewers. This year with the Rays, Lopez hit .216/.248/.320, and he was benched because of a lack of hustle before being demoted to AAA. He seemed to find his stroke a little bit in Durham, though, hitting .305/.357/.474 in 190 at-bats. He's only 31, so there's a chance that he's not finished after all.

The Brewers didn’t reacquire Lopez to start -- and according to Tom Hadricourt, he’ll start at AAA Nashville for now -- so they might go with the patient ways of Craig Counsell after all, but at the very least, Lopez provides a little depth on the bench if they decide he’s worthy of a roster spot.
