Tomas Kaberle has signed a three-year, $12.75 million contract with the Carolina Hurricanes, according to a report from Darren Dreger of TSN, and the Hurricanes have traded defenseman Joe Corvo to the Boston Bruins for a fourth round pick in separate moves. Kaberle, a free agent, just won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins after his contract was traded to the team from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the deadline.
Tomas Kaberle Signs With Hurricanes For Three Years, $12.75 Million; Carolina Trades Joe Corvo To Boston
The deal comes with a cap hit of $4.25 million per year, which is the same as Kaberle's last deal, a five-year deal signed in 2006. Kaberle was less than impressive in his time with the Bruins, not turning into the answer Peter Chiarelli and Claude Julien hoped he'd be behind Zdeno Chara and Dennis Seidenberg on the Boston defense.
His playing time diminished in the postseason and, according to Joe Haggerty of CSN New England, the Bruins were only willing to offer him a two-year deal this summer. Apparently, Kaberle wasn’t alright with that, and now he’s a Hurricane.
Essentially, this is a swap of Corvo and Kaberle. Nobody will tell you that Corvo is nearly as solid a defenseman as Kaberle, but he is a $1.75 million cheaper per season, and that contract expires at the end of next season anyway.
Bruins fans, like those at Stanley Cup of Chowder, will likely tell you that Carolina overpaid when all’s said and done.
The Bruins look like winners here. Kaberle had four goals and 42 assists for the Bruins/Leafs last year in the regular season. Essentially they’re paying less money for a one-year older guy that can produce nearly as well as Kaberle did.
