No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton received the majority of the snaps for the Carolina Panthers in their NFL preseason opener against the New York Giants on Saturday night. Ultimately, what resulted was a mixed bag. Newton really struggled with his accuracy, completing only eight of 19 passes. However, he did get 134 yards, committed zero turnovers and led two scoring drives despite not throwing a touchdown pass.

Afterwards, Newton felt pretty good about his performance.
“I was just trying to go out there and first off prove to myself that I could play on this level,” Newton said. “After that first little completion, I started to get the juices flowing. It was like, ‘Hey, I’m in the NFL,’ and I started to get a little swagger about myself.”
SB Nation's Panthers blog Cat Scratch Reader was also encouraged, saying that while Newton's accuracy was a bit off, his reads and progression was sound. The same cannot be said for Jimmy Clausen, who began the game by throwing an interception that was returned for a touchdown.
