Daunte Culpepper Expected To Sign One-Year Deal With 49ers

Daunte Culpepper worked out for the San Francisco 49ers on Monday and is now expected to sign a one-year deal. The plan is apparently for Culpepper to come in as the No. 3 quarterback behind both Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick.

The signing of Culpepper could be seen as a bit of a desperate gamble. The 34-year-old last played in the NFL in 2009 and has not played as many as nine games since 2004. His last season in the NFL was with the Detroit Lions, when he started 5 of 8 games, completed less than 60 percent of his passes and threw three touchdowns to six interceptions. Last year, he played for the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League where he was coached by former Minnesota Vikings coach Dennis Green. He was named the league's offensive player of the year.

It has been three seasons since he completed as many as 60 percent of his passes and 2004 was the last time he threw more touchdowns than interceptions. Back then, he was considered one of the league’s best players, throwing for more than 4,700 yards and a career-best 39 touchdowns to just 11 interceptions. He has been hampered by injuries almost ever since.
