San Francisco 49ers Bringing QB Daunte Culpepper In For Workout
Unhappy with the performance of Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick in the San Francisco 49er’s 24-3 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Friday’s preseason opener, head coach Jim Harbaugh said the team is bringing in 34-year-old Daunte Culpepper for a tryout on Monday.
Culpepper hasn’t played in the NFL since a half-season run with Detroit in 2009. He spent last season with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League.
The No. 11 pick overall in the 1999 NFL Draft, Culpepper played in three Pro Bowls during a career spent mostly with the Minnesota Vikings.
Despite the shaky QB play, San Fran blog Niners Nation doesn’t know what to make of the tryout:
As for bringing in Culpepper for a workout, I'm not really sure what to make of that. It's good to at least do his due diligence with some veterans. At the same time, Culpepper's last strong season was 2004. He's had his moments since then, but they've been far and few between. I don't really know how I'd compare him with Troy Smith or David Carr, but for a third QB, I guess it's more or less "whatever."
