DC United is a massively improved team from the one that claimed just 22 points a season ago. At 30 points through 22 games, they have already proven that this team is at least heading in the right direction. Are they improved enough to earn a spot in the playoffs? Thursday's road game against the Chicago Fire could go a long way in determining that.
Chicago Fire Vs. DC United, Preview: In Need Of A Victory
Since dropping what seemed to be a must win game when they hosted the New England Revolution three matches ago, United have claimed seven points to put themselves back in the thick of it. Last week's 4-0 dismantling of the lowly Vancouver Whitecaps was exactly the kind of performance they needed to show that they are capable of beating teams they should.
The Fire are one of those teams. Sure, this game is being played at Toyota Park, but the Fire have managed just 10 points in 13 home games. While a win might not be an absolute necessity, anything less would represent a serious missed opportunity. After this game, eight of United’s final 11 games are against teams currently in playoff position and six of their 11 games are on the road.
Time: 6 p.m. TV: ESPN2. Pick: United 2-0.
