The San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders traditional preseason game isn't expected to continue after a weekend contest at Candlestick saw fan violence escalate, including a shooting injuring two people. Mayors for both cities have already decried the violence and the Mercury News reports that their annual games likely won't continue.
After Shooting, 49ers-Raiders Preseason Games Expected To End
Though the two teams haven’t told each other that they don’t want to play the game any more, the NFL source said that there is no way the game will be played next year, the year after and maybe longer than that.
The report says both the Raiders and 49ers front offices have discussed ending the game while the NFL and local police are in support of ending it.
It’s a situation where a small percentage of those in attendance are ruining it for everyone. That said, the best (and safest) move appears to simply end the games between the two teams.
Ending the preseason games between the two teams will stop the problems but the the NFL schedule is set up so the two teams will play every four years.
