Lawrence Timmons Gets Big Contract Joining Steelers’ LaMarr Woodley

The Pittsburgh Steelers obviously had a priority entering this offseason, which started less than a month ago -- lock up the linebackers. In the 2007 NFL draft, the Steelers nailed it with their top two picks selecting LB Lawrence Timmons in the first round and LB LaMarr Woodley in the second round.

Woodley was slapped with the franchise tag and, in the first week of August, received a six-year, $61.5 million contract. He was due his long-term deal and since the Steelers generally keep their own guys rather than go fishing in free agency, his new deal wasn’t a big surprise.

The latest linebacker to join Woodley among the well-paid players on the team is Timmons. Reports came out early on Tuesday morning that Timmons agreed to a five-year, $50 million extension with the Steelers. He becomes the second linebacker from that draft to sign a long-term deal.

Timmons and Woodley are good examples of why the Steelers are continually an elite team. They draft well and keep their own players in-house. It’s really that simple and the Steelers are perfect examples of using the system to their advantage.

As SB Nation’s Behind The Steel Curtain points out, Timmons may even be underrated despite the big deal.
