Colin White Signed By San Jose Sharks After Devils Buyout

The San Jose Sharks continue to bolster their blue-line, signing defenseman Colin White after the veteran was released by the New Jersey Devils. The deal is reportedly worth about $1 million and is for one year. White was scheduled to make $3 million this year, but the Devils opted to place him on waivers. Once he went unclaimed he was bought out for $2 million and made an unrestricted free agent.

Devils GM Lou Lamoriello said it was hard to part ways with a player like White, who had played such a big part in the team’s success:

“This is a hockey and business decision,” Lamoriello said of the moves. “Absolutely, this is most difficult. I’ve had Colin since he was 17. We’ve had a friendship. But you have to be able to separate that from the business side.”

White joins a blue line that now includes the recently extended Brent Burns, as well as the likes of Dan Boyle, Douglas Murray, Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Jason Demers that will make up one of the deeper defensive units in the league. White is more of a physical presence, registering just six points last season and never eclipsing the 20 points he registered during his first full season in 2000-01. He'll likely play on the team's bottom defensive pairing.
