Saturday's matchup with the Kansas City Royals may prove costly for the Detroit Tigers. Though the Tigers did down the Royals, 4-3, they lost Victor Martinez after the catcher was involved in an awkward play in the eighth inning while pulling up near the plate. Martinez was out by a significant margin, and as he pulled up near the plate, his knee seemed to buckle. After hopping around on one leg, Martinez went to the ground before being helped from the field by trainers.
Victor Martinez Injury: Knee Sprain Forces Detroit Tigers DH From Saturday’s Game
Victor Martinez left Saturday’s game with a sprained left knee after an awkward play at the plate.
For now, Martinez has been diagnosed with a knee sprain, according to Jason Beck.
Left knee sprain for Martinez. He’ll be evaluated further tomorrow.
While a sprain diagnosis is encouraging, Martinez will still need to undergo further tests to determine how much damage was done to his left knee. If it’s only a sprain, the injury shouldn’t keep him sidelined for very long. However, if there’s further ligament damage, the prognosis could be much worse.
