Alex Rodriguez Injury: Yankees Third Baseman Could Start Rehab Assignment Friday

The New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez, who has been out of the lineup since July 7 with a meniscus tear in his right knee for which he had arthroscopic surgery, may begin a rehab assignment on Friday, according to the New York Post:

Alex Rodriguez might be able to start playing in minor league games Friday after making progress during yesterday’s workout in Tampa.

Asked the earliest the cleanup hitter could start a rehab assignment, general manager Brian Cashman said “the 12th.”

The article goes on to say that A-Rod has been working out, doing running drills and taking some batting practice, and is expected to ramp up those workouts beginning today.

Rodriguez, prior to the injury, was hitting .295/.366/.485 with 13 home runs and 52 RBI in 80 games. The Yankees, though they could surely use that sort of production in the middle of their order, don’t seem to have missed a beat while A-Rod has been out. Even though they lost Saturday to the Red Sox, a defeat that dropped them back into a first place tie with Boston in the AL East, they are 18-8 since Rodriguez has been out of the lineup.

Which may be one reason they aren’t rushing him back.
