Joe Paterno was released from the hospital on Tuesday morning after going through precautionary steps and not requiring surgery. The 84-year-old head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions was expected to return to practice on Wednesday. He has been away from practice since Sunday when he was injured in a collision with wide receiver Devon Smith.

“It’s time for everyone to turn the attention to the team,” Paterno said on the school’s website. “We have a lot of hard work ahead in order to be as good as we think we can be.”
The injury has ramped up speculation that the coach may be close to retirement, an idea that his son and quarterbacks coach Jay quashed in comments to the Associated Press:
“This is nothing more than a small blip on the radar,” Jay Paterno said.
Paterno enters his 47th season at Penn State with 401 career victories. During the Big Ten media day, he said he could coach another four of five years, a statement that has been his standard response for quite some time. On Monday, he held a conference call with his coaches, another indication that he’s not planning on going anywhere anytime soon.
