Zach Stewart Perfect Game Broken Up By Twins’ Danny Valencia

The Chicago White Sox took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the eighth inning in Minnesota against the Twins in the nightcap of a split doubleheader. The Sox’ Brent Morel had three hits and two RBI for the visitors.

Almost more important than the lead, and possible sweep of the twin bill, was the perfect game that Chicago’s rookie righthander Zach Stewart had going against the Twins. Stewart had retired the first 21 batters he faced in the game, striking out six and throwing just 75 pitches, 51 for strikes in those seven innings.

Danny Valencia led off the inning for the Twins and ran the count to 2-2, then fouling off three pitches. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Valencia laced a Stewart fastball down the right field line, past right fielder Alejandro De Aza, to break up the perfect game and no-hitter.
