Sione Pouha Avoids Free Agency With Contract Extension From Jets

Sione Pouha won't be hitting free agency. According to the Star-Ledger, Pouha and the New York Jets agreed to a three-year contract extension. If he wasn't signed, Pouha would have become an unrestricted free agent on Tuesday afternoon.

This was one of the priorities for the Jets this offseason, and reports last week said the team was close to a deal, so it shouldn’t be a surprise that it got done.

Pouha joined the Jets in the third round of the 2005 NFL draft. He wasn't a starter until the 2009 season, Rex Ryan's first year, after Kris Jenkins went down with a season-ending injury. He started the following season as a backup before being pushed back into the starting lineup with another Jenkins injury.

Pouha is 33 years old, so a three-year deal sounds about right for him. He’ll get paid, and the Jets have assurances at nose tackle for the short term future.
