A year ago, Bartolo Colon signed with the Yankees as some sort of experiment and wound up making $900,000. He came out of nowhere to make 26 starts with an above-average ERA, and he turned that success into a big huge raise. Jon Heyman:
Bartolo Colon Contract Worth $2 Million
Colon got $2M guaranteed from a’s.
Okay, so it’s a big huge raise to you and me. It’s less of a big huge raise to Bartolo Colon, who earned $16 million as recently as 2007. But given that Colon’s 38 years old, and given where he was before last season, I don’t think he has much to complain about.
It's interesting that Colon has decided to sign with the A's, instead of the Diamondbacks, who were reported to have interest. The Diamondbacks are better than the A's are. (Science!) But Colon has spent nearly his entire career in the American League, and besides, maybe he's planning on posting a park-influenced low ERA and getting traded to a contender in June or July. Big picture, you guys.
