NFL trade rumors: DeAngelo Williams garnering interest

Panthers could free up future salary space with the right deal.

Multiple sources have told Pro Football Talk that the Carolina Panthers would be willing to listen to trade offers for running back DeAngelo Williams. The rumors come on the same day that Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith told the Charlotte Observer that he hopes to finish his career with the Panthers unless he's cut. The NFL trade deadline is Thursday at 4PM.

PFT explains that trading Williams, who has already lost his spot on the depth chart, would remove over $17 million in future salaries and would clear up space for a new general manager to rebuild the team in 2013 and 2014. The Panthers aren’t in a hurry to move Williams, but would consider it if an attractive deal materializes.

According to the Charlotte Observer, Williams brushed off trade questions from the media Wednesday. When asked how he deals with trade talks, he said “by doing what I’m doing right now. Going to work.”

Williams has rushed 61 times for 210 yards so far this season. He was a 1,000 yard rusher in 2008 and 2009. Last year, Williams averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He’s only averaging 3.4 yards per carry this season.

The Panthers travel to Washington this weekend to face the Redskins. Kickoff is at 1PM.
