The second round of the DFB Pokal came to the conclusion with no Bundesliga sides being eliminated by lower division sides. This comes after the first round where a record six top flight sides were eliminated.
DFB Pokal, 2nd Round: Bayern Munich, Stuttgart bash 2.Bundesliga opponents
Bayern Munich and Stuttgart put together clean sheets as they easily moved on to the third round of the DFB Pokal.
Karlsruher 1-0 Duisburg
It took 88 minutes, but Karlsruher finally found a winner to see their way into the third round of the DFB Pokal. Karlsruher threw men forward in the dying minutes and Hakan Calhanoglu’s cross was headed into the back of the net by Dennis Kempe for the winner.
Arminia Bielefeld 2-3 (aet) Bayer Leverkusen
Bayer Leverkusen needed extra time to get past 3.Liga side Arminia Bielefeld. The hosts struck first with Sebastian Hille scoring after only 11 minutes. Leverkusen grabbed a goal on either side of halftime with Jens Hegeler and Manuel Friedrich finding the back of the net. However, Tom Schütz scored an equalizer to send the match into extra time. The difference in the extra time was Andre Schürrle, and the German international knocked in the winner to send Leverkusen through to the next round.
Kickers Offenbach 2-0 Union Berlin
Union couldn’t break through and find their way through the Offenbach defense on the night. The 3.Liga side broke through late in the second half on a goal from Mathias Fetsch. They put the match away in the final minutes when Stefan Vogler scored to make it 2-0.
Stuttgart 3-0 St. Pauli
Stuttgart pounded St. Pauli 3-0 to move on to the next round of the DFB Pokal. Ibrahima Traore, Vedad Ibisevic, Tamas Hajnal put St. Pauli to the sword early and scored all three goals before the halftime whistle.
Hannover 1-1 (4-3) Dynamo Dresden
Ron-Robert Zieler is the hero on the day by saving two penalties in the shootout to see Hannover 96 past Dynamo Dresden after a 1-1 score after extra time. Hannover struck first in relegation when Mame Biram Diouf scored after 15 minutes. Dynamo found their equalizer after only 28 minutes. Roman Bregerie scored a free kick from about 25 meters out.
Bayern Munich 4-0 Kaiserslautern
Claudio Pizarro and Arjen Robben scored two goals each to see Bayern Munich past Kaiserslautern. While Bayern only held a 1-0 lead at the break thanks to Pizarro, the result was never truly in doubt. Bayern played almost all reserves in this one giving the regulars a much needed break. Robben wore the armband and played a full 90 minutes. Seriously. He did.
Fortuna Düsseldorf 1-0 (aet) Borussia Mönchengladbach
It took extra time to decide the Rhine Derby between Düsseldorf and Gladbach, but they only got there thanks to a penalty save in the 84th minute by Marc Andre ter Stegen on Jens Langeneke. The winner came in the 87th minute from former Gladbach man Nando Rafael.
Wolfsburg 2-0 FSV Frankfurt
Wolfsburg continued their “Fired manager bump” by dispatching of FSV Frankfurt 2-0. Diego scored the first and assisted on Bas Dost’s goal to advance to the next round of the competition. With the shackle that is Felix Magath off of this team, Wolfsburg could go on a nice little run.
