After a first round in which six Bundesliga sides were dumped out of the competition, nobody was quite sure what to expect as round two started on Tuesday. Unfortunately, there were zero upsets today. The big teams all won. The early rounds of cup competitions aren’t fun when the big teams all win!
DFB Pokal, 2nd Round: Upsets? We don’t need no stinkin’ upsets! Favorites win the day
Borussia Dortmund and Schalke sweep to dominating victories as the favorites rule on Tuesday.
Berliner AK 0-3 1860 Munich
Moritz Stoppelkamp scored a brace in each half and Maximilian Nicu added another in the dying minutes to lead 1860 Munich to a 3-0 victory over Berliner AK. The Regionalliga side go out with a whimper after an impressive victory over Hoffenheim in the first round.
Wormatia Worms 0-0 (3-4 penalties) Köln
It took penalties, but Köln were able to dispatch of another Regionalliga side. As a neutral, I was pulling for Worms, but it just wasn’t meant to be for today.
Preußen Münster 0-1 Augsburg
I wanted to see Münster pull the upset. The Preußenstadion was rocking, and both sides exchanged chances for the hour. Augsburg started to take control as Münster’s players began to wear down. Jan-Ingwer Callsen-Bracker scored after 69 minutes with a low, hard shot to the far post that beat Daniel Masuch.
Eintracht Braunschweig 0-2 Freiburg
Freiberg made my predictions completely pointless with a goal after only 35 seconds by Daniel Caligiuri. I thought Braunschweig may be able to hold out for a victory, but it was not to be. Johannes Flum scored a few minutes from the end to end the 2.Bundesliga’s dream of getting through to the next round.
Havelse 1-3 Bochum
Havelse opened the scoring after 17 minutes when Josef Posipal headed in a great goal. Bochum found their equalizer at the half hour mark when Alexander Iashvili scored. It was a nervy time for Bochum as the second half trudged along, and they couldn’t find another goal. It finally came in the 73rd minute when Marc Rzatkowski scored to make it 2-1. Bochum finally put the match away in stoppage time thanks to Michael Ortega.
Schalke 3-0 Sandhausen
Schalke used two second half goals to ease past 2.Bundesliga side Sandhausen 3-0. Ibrahim Afellay opened the scoring with a goal after only 11 minutes. Ciprian Marica and Klaas Jan Huntelaar scored in the second half to finish off the visitors.
Aalen 1-4 Borussia Dortmund
Borussia Dortmund hammered 3.Liga side Aalen 4-1 to move on to the third round of the DFB Pokal. Mats Hummels opened the scoring with an excellent move into the penalty area before blasting a shot past Jasmin Fejzic. Marcel Schmelzer added another before the half, and Mario Götze and Julian Schieber scored in the second half. Michael Klauß scored an excellent free kick late in the match as a consolation goal.
Mainz 2-0 Erzgebirge Aue
Andreas Ivanschitz opened the scoring, and Yunus Malli added another just after halftime to see Mainz past Erzgebirge Aue to move on to the third round of the DFB Pokal. I lauded Mainz’s defense after last weekend’s Bundesliga matches, and they didn’t disappoint today with another shutout.
