UTEP coaching search: Add Dirk Koetter to reported list

Koetter, the former Arizona State head coach, is a former UTEP assistant under current athletic director Bob Stull.

Jim Cowsert-US PRESSWIRE

Add Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter to the list of candidates to replace the retiring Mike Price as head coach of the UTEP football program.

Koetter, 53, is the former head coach at Boise State and Arizona State. He went after the Hawaii opening last season and is rumored to want to be a head coach again. Pete Roussel points out Koetter has UTEP ties, having been the Miners’ offensive coordinator when current athletic director Bob Stull was the UTEP head coach, and again coached under Stull at Missouri from 1989-93. Koetter has also been linked to the vacancy at the University of Kentucky, where Joker Phillips was fired earlier this season.

Koetter has spent nine seasons as a collegiate head coach. He was the head man at Boise State from 1998-2000, where he went 26-10 over three seasons, winning two Big West championships and two Humanitarian Bowls. He parlayed that performance into he job at Arizona State. Koetter was at ASU from 2001-2006, but never finished higher than 5-3 in Pac-12 play and was 21-28 in league games overall before he was fired at the conclusion of the 2006 season. He has since been the OC in Jacksonville, and now Atlanta.

Other candidates linked to the UTEP opening are former Colorado coach Dan Hawkins, Missouri assistant David Yost, and Texas A&M special teams coordinator Brian Polian.
