Eagles vs. Cowboys, Week 13: Dallas fans examine effect of slow starts

The Dallas Cowboys would be much harder to beat if they could just find a way to get an early lead.

The Dallas Cowboys fell victim to yet another slow start on Sunday night, having to overcome another halftime deficit in a comeback win over the Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys scored 28 points in the second half to beat the reeling Eagles, 38-33, in a game that should not have been nearly that close.

The Cowboys have made a habit out of slow starts this season, trailing at the half in eight of 12 games on the year. On Sunday night, Tony Romo and the Cowboys offense again struggled with mistakes as they struggled to put points on the board until the final minute of the half.

The slow starts are becoming troublesome for a team with playoff aspirations, as One.Cool.Customer of Blogging The Boys notes, as teams with the lead are generally harder to beat.

We’ve seen that when the Cowboys did get an early lead, they were not so easy to beat. Getting that early lead is not an easy thing to do, but it will change the face of the game to the Cowboys’ advantage: They can afford a more balanced offensive gameplan, they’ll get more takeaways on defense, they’ll score more points and ultimately win more games.

Getting an early lead will be critical to the remainder of the Cowboys’ season. The odds are that if they take a lead in each of their remaining games, they’ll go 3-1 down the stretch. If they continue playing from behind, it’s likely they’ll end up 1-3.

Romo was magnificent in the second half, going 10-for-10 while tossing three touchdowns in the comeback win. The Cowboys, 6-6, will head on the road to face the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday in yet another crucial game for Dallas.
