The 2012 Australian Open begins on Nov. 6 in the 108th anniversary of the original competition in 1904. The field features four of the past five tournament champions and many of Australia’s greatest golfers. The Australian Open carries an important distinction of being a national open that offers a minimum number of points in the World Golf Rankings, regardless of the strength of the field.

The Australian Open kicks off this week with a number of former champions battling for the title.

Greg Chalmers enters the tournament as the defending champion. 2011 was his second title in the competition, as his first came in 1998. Chalmers made almost $1.2 million on the PGA Tour this year, making 20 cuts and finishing in the top 10 once.
Adam Scott and Geoff Ogilvy were the 2009 and 2010 champions. Scott couldn’t notch a PGA win in 2012, but was able to tally five top-10 finishes and make nearly $3 million in just 16 events. Ogilvy earned $1.2 million on the Tour, with a single top-10 result.
The event is part of the PGA Tour of Australia and the OneAsia Tour. It offers a $1.25 million purse.
