Virginia Tech Vs. No. 5 Duke: Blue Devils Fight Off Hokies For Narrow Overtime Win

The Duke Blue Devils won their sixth straight ACC game and improved to 12-2 in the conference with a hard-fought 70-65 overtime win over the Virginia Tech Hokies. The Hokies have won at Cameron only once in 18 previous tries and their season of struggles continued on Saturday with the heartbreaking overtime loss. Duke shot poorly from the field, and just 25 percent from behind the arc which kept the Hokies in it throughout.

The second half was filled with one lead change after another, as both teams went back-and-forth in a defensive struggle. After an Erick Green runner in the lane to tie it, the Hokies held the Devils on the defensive end forcing a turnover and getting the ball back with game tied. Tech took the lead when Dorenzo Hudson banked in a three-pointer with just over a minute to play that gave the Hokies a 58-55 lead. Duke would then manage to get it back to even with a Mason Plumlee put back and an Austin Rivers free throw. The Devils would hold on the final possession, as Green missed a runner and a last second tip attempt that went left off of the rim.

Duke took control in overtime, getting to the free-throw line 12 times and hitting eight from the charity stripe. For the game, the Devils doubled up the Hokies at the free-throw line to sneak out the win. Freshman Austin Rivers led the Devils with 23 points, including a huge three-pointer with two and a half minutes remaining that gave Duke a two-point lead. Seth Curry combined with his backcourt mate and added 19 points.
