Source Says Rangers Locking Up Elvis Andrus Through 2014

With three full seasons in the major leagues, Texas Rangers shortstop was eligible for salary arbitration this winter.

Now that won’t be necessary, ever, as Andrus and the Rangers have agreed on a three-year deal that will lock him up through the 2014 season, after which -- unless he signs a contract extension -- he’ll be eligible for free agency.

ESPN.com’s Richard Durrett:

A source says Andrus’ deal, which is pending a physical, is worth between $14-15 million.

Andrus, 23, will avoid arbitration for the remainder of his career with Texas thanks to the contract. He batted .279 with five homers and 60 RBIs with 37 stolen bases in 2011.

Now, it should be said that we’ve got no official confirmation (as of Tuesday night). Sometimes sources are wrong, or at least terribly premature. But a deal like this seems to make sense for all parties, as the Rangers would have both cost-control and cost-certainty while Andrus will become quite a wealthy young man.
