Scott Janssen, self-dubbed the “The Mushing Mortician” -- he owns a funeral home in Anchorage -- was making the run from Rainy Pass to Rohn in the 2012 Iditarod when he experienced every musher’s worst nightmare: a dog collapsing.
‘The Mushing Mortician’ Saves Dog’s Life With CPR
↵Janssen’s 9-year-old husky, Marshall, suddenly stopped pulling and went down. “I know what death looks like, and he was gone,” said Janssen. So he did what most dog-lovers would do in the situation: he began sobbing, and then began CPR.
↵↵“I had my mouth over his nose, breathing into his nose as I was compressing and rubbing his chest, trying to work the air out,” Janssen said.
↵After what seemed like an eternity but was likely no more than five minutes, Janssen talked to the dog, he said. “I’m like c’mon dude, please come back.’”
↵“And he did.”

Marshall was sent home with the vets, and was "bummed out that he wasn't going [mushing] with us." The Anchorage Daily News' Sled Blog has the full story, including video of Janssen talking about nearly losing his friend.
