Stephen Drew Close To 2012 Diamondbacks Debut

Diamondbacks shortstop Stephen Drew suffered a serious ankle injury almost a year ago, in July 2011. He had surgery and played a few games in extended spring training, and then fell off the radar.

Recently, he began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Reno, where he is hitting .250/.333/.531 in eight games. Now, he could be close to a return to major-league action. Adam Green:

Diamondbacks GM Kevin Towers told Arizona Sports 620’s Doug and Wolf he thinks Drew will be heading home to Atlanta for a bit due to a death in the family, which lines up pretty well with the Diamondbacks’ schedule.

After all, they begin a road series against the Braves on June 26.

“We talked about maybe having him play a game or two in Mobile since we’re on the East Coast, I think our trainer was going to talk to him about that,” Towers said. “And then hopefully activate him on Wednesday.”

How convenient! The Mobile Bay Bears are the Diamondbacks’ Double-A affiliate. And all of this just a couple of weeks after D’backs managing general partner Ken Kendrick called into question Drew’s motives for taking so long to come back.

Sounds like they’re all one big happy family again now, and just when the D’backs are creeping back toward the NL West race, just a game under .500.
