Diamondbacks Activate Stephen Drew

Stephen Drew last played a baseball game with the Diamondbacks on July 20, 2011, and that's when this happened:

A description of the injuries that Drew sustained:

Drew suffered a spiral fracture of his right fibula and tore ligaments in his ankle when sliding into home last season on July 20 against the Milwaukee Brewers.

Pretty miserable. That’s the sort of incident that leads to a long recovery, and Drew is only now getting back to the majors. On Wednesday, he has officially been activated from the disabled list.

Drew was recently criticized in the press by Diamondbacks managing general partner Ken Kendrick for taking too long in his rehab. Drew believes he did everything he could to get back on the field as soon as possible, and he's spent the last few weeks on a minor-league rehab assignment. He'll start now for the Diamondbacks, although not every day. Willie Bloomquist and John McDonald have shared the shortstop position in 2012, and they haven't performed as poorly as you might expect.

Drew owned a 91 OPS+ at the time of his injury last season. His career OPS+ is 98, and he’s considered passable in the field, although that was before he suffered a severe injury.
