Jarrod Parker No-Hitter Broken Up In 8th

The Texas Rangers lead the American League in scoring, but on Monday night, Oakland A's rookie right-hander Jarrod Parker made them look silly, taking a no-hitter into the eighth inning. But on the second pitch of the inning, Michael Young hit a slider up the middle for a clean single. It was Young's 2125th hit of his career. It was Parker's ninth start.

Alas, the no-hitter was not to be. But after a first pitch pop-out from Nelson Cruz, David Murphy grounded into a first-pitch double play, and Parker escaped without allowing another runner.

Young broke up the no-hitter, but he probably didn’t break A’s manager Bob Melvin’s heart. Parker entered the eighth inning having thrown 107 pitches, about seven more than you think the A’s would like to see their prized youngster throw. The last pitcher pulled with a no-hitter after seven innings was Kevin Slowey in 2010. Melvin had to have been thinking about it.
