GIF Tournament II: The Reckoning

We’ve seen too many amazing and hilarious animated sports GIFs over the last few months to simply forget about them. Over the next week, we’re going to vote on the very best. This is the most important election of the year.

Hello, friend. I’m so glad you could join us. Today, we begin SB Nation’s second-ever GIF TOURNAMENT.

In the first GIF TOURNAMENT, which we held in March, ROLLERBLADING RAPTOR stomped all the way through the bracket and won in convincing fashion to claim the title of Greatest Animated Sports GIF Ever. This time around, we will determine the greatest GIF since May, when we first launched THIS WEEK IN GIFs.

This is a 32-GIF tournament, and you helped set the field. The 14 weekly champions of THIS WEEK IN GIFs received automatic bids and the highest seeds. I looked through the archives of THIS WEEK IN GIFs and added 12 more that, in my estimation, deserved a second chance. The remaining six slots were filled with excellent GIFs that somehow managed to slip through the cracks.

There are two regions in this GIF tournament: the ROLLERBLADING RAPTORS MASCOT region and the MORTIFIED MICHIGAN PUNTER region, named in honor of the two finalists of GIF TOURNAMENT I. Here is the full schedule. Please either a) request vacation time from your employer accordingly, or b) watch GIFs all day at work and get fired:

Wednesday, August 15th: First round (RAPTORS MASCOT region)
Thursday, August 16th: First round (MORTIFIED PUNTER region)
Friday, August 17th: Sweet 16
Monday, August 20th: Elite Eight
Tuesday, August 21st: Final Four
Wednesday, August 22nd: Championship
Thursday, August 23rd: MYSTERIOUS BONUS ROUND

And here is today’s schedule of events. I’ll be tweeting links to GIF elections throughout the day. I’ll also be updating this site with links throughout the day, so you can check back here if you’d prefer.
