From CSN Bay Area’s Andrew Baggarly on Monday’s duel between Madison Bumgarner and Clayton Kershaw:
Controlled Fire
It was only the third time in the live-ball era that two pitchers each compiled at least 10 strikeouts without walking a batter.Quite impressive. Note, though, that there have been 34 games this year in which a starter has recorded at least 10 strikeouts and zero walks. That’s more than happened in the 1920s, ‘30s, and ‘40s ... combined.
It’s a slightly different era.
Special consideration, then, should be given to Carl Hubbell and Roy Parmelee, who combined to strike out 25 batters for the Giants without a walk over 27 innings of a doubleheader in 1933. Yeeeesh.
