Jerry Hairston Hip Surgery To End Season

The Los Angeles Dodgers will be without the services of utility man Jerry Hairston Jr. for the remainder of the season, as the 14-year veteran will undergo surgery to repair his left hip.

The surgery still hasn’t been scheduled, but a team spokesman said the procedure would likely take place within a couple of weeks. Total recovery time is expected to be four to six months.

Hairston has been on the disabled list since August 13 with left hip inflammation, an injury he said bothered him for three months. Hairston was rehabbing at the Dodgers’ training facility in Glendale, Arizona, but a week of treatment brought no improvement in his hip condition.

“He’s still having a lot of pain and debating on what his next step is,” manager Don Mattingly said on Tuesday. “We originally felt this was going to be 15 days, but right now Jerry hasn’t responded very well at this point.”

Hairston, 36, hit .273/.342/.387 in 78 games for the Dodgers this season, including .212/.268/.288 in 21 games after the All-Star break. He started games at second base, third base, and left field for the Dodgers this season, and is under contract for $3.75 million in 2013.
